GAME VIEWING This large scenically attractive park lies on the northern bank of the Zambezi River, opposite Zimbabwe's Mana Pools National Park. Miombo woodland covers the hills, with mopane and acacia dominating the valley floor. A wide variety of game species occur, such as elephant, buffalo, roan, waterbuck, kudu, bushbuck and hippopotamus, but numbers have been greatly reduced by poaching. Lion and leopard are the main predatory species in the park. It becomes very hot in summer. Location: Southern Zambia; east of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka follow the main road eastwards towards Chipata for approximately 100 km, then take the secondary road towards Chakwenga, which lies about 60 km inside the park. Check with the authority before entering. There is no internal road network. Accommodation: The Royal Chiawa Lodge is located on the park's boundary and a tented camp with full catering - Musango Camp - is now in operation inside the conservation area. Other facilities: None. A private company, Circuit Holdings, is planning to develop the park. Open: Check with the authority. Beware: Land mines planted during the war in the then Rhodesia in the 1970s are said to be a hazard.
